Northernization and Arewa's False Narratives
This video and attitudes discussed here is the official genesis of state sanctioned tribalism and the quota system in Nigeria.
What the late Sultan fails to accept is that if you do not go to school and a cross section of your citizenry see Education as Harem and women are restricted to "ze orther room" and your subjects are more inclined to a Koranic education then you will end up with citizens not qualified to hold administrative positions requiring certification of knowledge or able to compete at the world stage with other tribes particularly the migrant Igbo in one Nigeria at that point in time.
Most of what separates leaders and the rich and poor today is education and the reputation of the schools from whence the acquired that knowledge, even in the army there was a distinction between Sandhurst and Indian trained subalterns, and no matter how smart you are, you will never be qualified or appointed to positions without the requisite qualification and or certification a lesson one becomes painfully aware when you leave Nigeria to the west and the look for certifications to prove the braggadio bombasts found in a traditional Nigeria CV not an American resume based on credentials and practical experience.
What the late Sultan confuses for arrogance is the reverse self-loathing he and his people feel at being in a subordinate position from lack of education across the board, basically it is a reverse resentment at lacking the academic qualification resulting in being bossed around by a non-Muslim individual from a perceived inferior tribe. This is not a trait singularly shared by the North as Igbo people suffer the same negative reverse attitudes from being somewhat ill equipped mentally to apply their intelligence at the game of securing power, but that is a subject for another post.
In response to a sweeping uneducated and unemployable proletariat, the Sultan instead of focusing on a vision of educating his people about the benefits of western education and understudying these Igbo administrators adopted a retrogressive policy of appointing less qualified talent and flooding the armed forces and civil services with semi-literates whose greatest career potential in saner climes would be as administrative clerks, instead these barely literate and half-baked secondary school were put into leadership positions through his North first policy and Nigeria has barely been able to get past its mediocre inclinations since.
The search for scapegoats in Igbos and grooming a next generation of leaders without solid intellectual foundations is the reason for the retrogressive underdevelopment and poverty in the NW and the mindless blood wrenching insurgency in the NE and the reason why its citizenry is so quick to resort to violence simply because they reach a point where the lack the education to articulate reasonable solutions and outcomes, little wonder Nigeria is in the mess it is.
It must be stated that the Sultans misguided north first policy achieved great success as it produced a new generation of groomed leaders who seized control of the levers of power in Nigeria, but in history, it is nothing but a few years in a stitch in time and a deceiving window dressing as the explosive growth of almajari and the Boko harem raids on schools highlighted by the Chibok girls kidnapping shows and which is slowly dragging the region back to low education and encroaching mediocrity and the desperate quest to hold onto power as the only source of survival thereby hobbling Nigeria's march towards true federalism.
